National Lawn Gets Organic Makeover

Oct. 10 -- A section of the lawn at the National Mall in Washington, D.C., has become a pilot project for an organic lawn maintenance project by the federal government.

SafeLawns.org, a coalition of nonprofit and for-profit groups that advocate organic lawn care, has recently plowed a section of the lawn at the National Mall and added compost, other natural soil amendments and fertilizers before reseeding the four-acre area.

The National Park Service and the Environmental Protection Agency will evaluate how the section with the complete organic makeover compares with another section maintained conventionally by the National Park Service and a third section that receives standard organic treatment.

The three block comparison is between the U.S. Capitol Building and the Washington Monument, starting at 3rd Street and extending to 7th Street.
